Janus Will Not Destroy Us

Good afternoon Sisters and Brothers of the Plainedge Federation of Teachers,

In case you have not heard, the Supreme Court ruled today in favor of Janus and against all the hard working women and men of this country. I wanted to take a minute to share with you my thoughts on the Supreme Court's decision in Janus vs. AFSCME.

The case decided today had absolutely nothing to do with the 1st Amendment and everything to do with attacking unions, and potentially limiting their ability to fight for their members' rights in the work place. The same wealthy special interests that have been attacking unions for decades funded this case. They think they can seize this opportunity to convince our members to abandon our union in an effort to diminish our voice in the workplace and weaken our strength at the bargaining table.

We're not going to let them!  Here in the PFT, we have already begun to send our message of solidarity to those who would seek to harm us by maintaining 100% membership in our union!

We all know what is at stake.  From West Virginia to Oklahoma to Kentucky, teachers unions across the country stand up to demand decent pay, a secure retirement, and a voice in our workplace.

Since every single current PFT member signed our member re-enrollment cards,  we have already shown that we refuse to have our rights rolled back. We refuse to be stripped of our voices.  We refuse to be divided or defeated.

There is strength in numbers. By standing together, by ensuring that everyone sticks with our union, we can protect our voice in the workplace and safeguard our benefits.

I encourage you to visit www.nysut.org/janus to learn more about how you can help preserve our voice, our values and our union. I know I'm sticking with our union now and for years to come!! I hope I can count on you to stick with our union too! In solidarity.
